Online secure networks

I just realised how many online secure networks I use! Just one or two years ago, I never conducted any financial transactions online. Now, I seem to be conducting so many different sort of transactions online ...

It sounds silly, but it just hit me this morning when I started using the net. I had to do all these online:

1. Buy tickets for a football game
2. Check the amount of a bill on one of my bank's online banking website
3. Pay the bill and transfer money between accounts on another of my bank's online banking website
4. Change some of my mobile phone's services on my mobile phone provider's website (also password protected)

I wonder how secure all these "secure" networks really are ...

Grandma passed away

Just found out that Grandma passed away. Found out from an email I got from my uncle of all things. Funny, I don't quite know what to think. I was never that close to Grandma and she caused my mum so much grief that I stopped talking to her about five years ago.

So should I go back for her funeral? I suppose that's the right thing to do - I dunno. I don't have the money even. Sigh ... what is happening this year?

Update

Called Dad. He seems to be keen to help. Nobody's back home now - everyone is spread across the world ...

My first week as work

So I've finally "made it". Working in the heart of the newsroom (or the online one at least), updating the front page of the website, editing stories and images for the half a million unique visitors each day. Sounds good eh?

I have to say I don't quite know what to make of my job yet. It was a strange week at work. The plane crash hit people pretty hard. I remember coming to work on Friday morning, and this woman just burst into tears. There's been a bit of that happening around here.

One thing that is interesting for me as a newbie is how closely knit this company seems to be. I'm sure I'll discover all the politics and problems soon enough, but there's quite a family feeling around here, which I suppose is rare in a big company, but perhaps more common in a media company.

I think HD was pretty good as a place to socialise; it was a small company and everyone's young. I'm not too sure how my new colleagues are going to be like. They certainly do like to drink, as the stereotype suggests, and people are always fun with a bit of alcohol in them.

That said, I find it a bit difficult watching my colleagues file new stories and get published in the paper while I'm plugging away subbing copy. And writers can be pretty careless with their writing sometimes, so there's always fixing up to do on almost every story. I guess if I were a journo, I would be just as bad, so I guess if I ever get to be a reporter, at least I would be able to file very clean copy. Hopefully the "if" becomes a "when" sooner rather than later!
